What Should I Expect at My First Chiropractic Appointment?
This is a great question and many people have. And your first visit could vary from office to office. A normal chiropractic visit will include the initial patient intake, physical exam, treatment, and a follow-up plan to get you better. However, it is important to note that one office may differ from another. What happens depends on your presenting symptoms.
Even more importantly, the treatment you get in our office may vary drastically from the treatment did you receive from another chiropractic office.
By the time you come into her office, you will already have talked to Jill Mitchem on the phone. Jill is our office manager, and she makes sure that everything’s clothes smoothly. She answers the phone, does the billing, reviews documents, communicates with attorneys and ensures that everything is taken care of properly, and all your questions are answered. She will greet with the warm friendly smile and approximately 30 years of chiropractic experience. She will make sure that you are comfortable and that all your questions are answered.
Once you come in the door, you will see Dr. Rainey’s letters on the front door. Additionally, you will see our office hours. Our hours are “suggested”. We do make special accommodations for individuals in emergency situations. We always make sure that we put the patient first. With a type of service that we offer, and with the professional Dr. Rainey Ian is in, he understands that there are certain sacrifices that come along with his position. As a result, he will do whatever it takes to make sure that you feel better as quickly as possible. Interestingly enough, Dr. Rainey lives 1.5 miles away from the office. This also provides reassurance to patients.
NEW PATIENT INTAKE
As you walk up to the front desk, Jill will hand you a clipboard with your initial paperwork. You will fill out a questionnaire that will help assess your current health condition, medical history, and any acute or chronic injuries. This paperwork will give Dr. Rainey the understanding that he needs to be able to best help you. This paperwork will ask for your insurance information, if applicable, and it will also ask you about the pain that you are experiencing, and it will also ask you what you would like to achieve from your chiropractic treatment. Essentially, we want to know what your goals so that we can help you get there.
After your paperwork is complete, Dr. Rainey will come out and greet you with a warm, friendly smile and welcome you to the office. Then, if you would like, he will give you a quick office to her, and then will take you back to my examination room where I will perform an initial examination and evaluation to determine what is causing your pain. If you don’t have any “physical pain” this examination will be used to determine any functional deficiencies that exist, and this will be the time that we strategize to determine the best approach to help you reach your wellness goals.
During this initial examination, blood pressure will be documented. If your blood pressure is too high, you will not be treated on that day. Your pulse will also be addressed, and your height and weight will be recorded. Then I will do a full orthopedic and neurological examination to determine any deficiencies that may exist. This will include muscle testing, checking reflexes, testing dermatome sensations and evaluating four positive test(s) that indicate the root cause of your condition.
After all of your paperwork is completed, and your initial examination has been completed, I will make a decision as to whether or not I need additional imaging completed. This additional imaging may include x-rays, MRIs or CT scans. This decision depends on the results of the testing performed, your history, and whether or not previous imaging has been recently performed.
THE FIRST ADJUSTMENT – to get relief
If additional imaging is not taken, and I feel very confident that I can help resolve your condition quickly and safely, I may perform an adjustment on the first day. This adjustment will provide a gentle, yet effective correction to the vertebrae in your skeletal system. This gentle, specific adjustment is designed to alleviate your pain and improve your health. To summarize, this adjustment will only be done after the first consultation, examination, and history, and imaging (if needed).
If I’m able to adjust you and your spine, is likely that you will receive immediate pain relief. Your first adjustment will take place on a comfortable padded table made specifically for chiropractic care. Adjustments may be performed in many different positions. You may live with your face down, on your side, on your back, or even sitting upright. It all depends on your pain level, your physical size, and your level of comfort.
after adjustment, you should be feeling better. The majority of adjustments result in decreased pain, improved range of motion and improved function. My plan is to have you walking up to the front desk with a smile on your face, feeling better and looking forward to your second visit.
As you check out at the front desk, we will schedule your next appointment, and you will provide payment or provide your insurance information so that we can correctly bill your insurance for your treatment.
additional visits may be needed. If so, I will recommend multiple sessions. This generally occurs if you have chronic pain, a high level of discomfort, or have multiple issues that need to be addressed. All these indicate that you may need ongoing care to obtain permanent relief. I will take into account your overall health, physical condition, and your ultimate goal when creating a treatment plan.
Be sure to check out our next blog where we provide a detailed explanation of your second visit.
